5 Makeup Artist Approved Tricks

One of my favorite things about being a professional makeup artist is getting to interact with and watch other super talented makeup artists work their magic. Everyone has different techniques that they use and you can learn so much by just observing . They inspire me and make me a better artist.  I’ve learned so many awesome tips and tricks over the years and I thought I would share some of my favorites with all of you.
1.) Dry Skin Miracle
I’m sure we have all had that experience where our skin is super dry and maybe even peeling. You attempt to put foundation on top of it to make it look better but it ends up flaking and only looking worse. If skipping foundation all together is not an option, try this combo to solve the problem. MixEmbryolisse Moisturizer with Make Up For Ever HD primer along with a tiny amount of Smashbox Luminizing Lotion and use as a base to foundation. I’ve seen this work miracles on photo shoots. I would stick to a liquid foundation because a cream or powder foundation will only accentuate the problem. Skip powder and instead spritz your face with a hydrating makeup setting spray like Urban Decay’s Dew Me Makeup Setting Spray. And just fyi-Embryolisse Moisturizer is a staple in most makeup artist’s kit and a great overall moisturizer for all skin types and can be used alone as a primer as well.

2.) Use Bronzer or Blush in your Crease
This is one of my favorite tricks and always makes the final result look polished. Use just normal bronzer or if you want it a bit more red or pink, use a blush. Dip your crease brush in the bronzer or blush and just blend lightly over the eyeshadow in the crease. It will look good with any eyeshadow color combination. It just adds a little depth and gives eyes a “glowing from within” look. One of my fav products to use for this is Cargo’s Coral Beach Blush. It has a combo of bronzy and reddish shades to mix or use alone.

3.) Use your Finger to Add that Final Punch of Color on your Eyelid
Your fingers really are one of the best makeup tools. And although you may not feel comfortable using them to blend your shadow, you should at least use them to add that last layer of shadow on the center of your lid. Rub your finger in the product and press it onto the lid. You will get the best color payoff using this method because sometimes using a brush blends the shadow too much, leaving it looking muddy and not its true color. This is also good to do when you are doing a neutral look and want to add a dash of color. Just a pop of pretty color on the center of your lid will complete your look.

4.) Always Tight-line your Eyes
A lot of you out there probably already do this but didn’t know it was called tight-lining. It is basically putting eyeliner on the inner rim of the top part of your eye, right under your upper eyelashes. This little trick is super subtle but can make the biggest difference in the final look. It really just makes your eyes pop and makes the look more intense. And for all the ladies out there with a sparse set of lashes, this trick will make your lash line appear fuller. You can use a waterproof black eyeliner pencil like Urban Decay’s 24/7 Waterproof Eyeliner in Zero or a gel liner such as Bobbi Brown’s Long Wear Gel Liner in Black Ink.

5.) Get your Lashes to Stay Curled
It is so irritating when you have a nice long set of lashes but they will not stay curled! Try curling your lashes with a normal eyelash curler, then applying a waterproof mascara mostly to the roots of your lashes, and then curling them again with the eyelash curler. Just be careful when curling them the second time around so you don’t pull out any of your lashes. My favorite mascara to use for this is Covergirl’s LashBlast Volume Waterproof Mascara.

Hope these little tricks helped! Let me know if any of you have any great tips to share!!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
xoxo Courtney
